New iPod Nano and iPod Touch – Big wow Steve!

Sep 10, 2008 in Technology

Was anyone else distinctly underwhelmed by the new Apple products launched today?  I mean, don’t get me wrong, they look great and everything, but really – was it worth all the fuss?

A few new Nanos (that look like the old Nano) in different colours, and a (very) slight upgrade to the iPod touch.  OK, so they’ve got accelerometers inside them (like a Wiimote!) but the shake to shuffle is something that’s been on SonyEricsson phones for a while now.  The colours of the new iPod Nano are supposed to be amazing, but if you re-order them you’ll notice that they seem to come in Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue and Indigo – recognise the sequence anyone?.  Oh, and pink and grey too – but so what!

When Steve Jobs makes a big show of an upgrade from iPod Touch software from 2.0 to 2.1, and invites Jack Bloody Johnson to pad the presentation out for 15 minutes you know it’s not that exciting!  The hall was full of fairly sycophantic Apple fanboys who cheered any announcement, even the amazing new headphones with – wait for it – built in volume control and the ability to skip tracks! Yeah! Just like my Sony Walkman had back in 1995.

Regardless, it’s probably worth having a look at the new range on www.apple.com – they do look pretty good, just not the big announcement we were hoping for.  I’m predicting a refresh of the MacBook line and potentially a MacTablet later in the year.  Rumours of the new junior version of the iTouch – iTouch Kids are still unconfirmed.

Anyway, you just know the new Nano will sell like hotcakes at Christmas, so it’s all good for me!

Happy Firefox Day!

Hello people!

It’s Firefox day today.  Thanks to Matt for reminding me.

So – get downloading the new version of Firefox – Firefox 3.0.  It’s faster and better than the last one – I like the ability to search from within the address bar and the way it autofills.  The ability to drag and drop nearly anything from a web page is useful too.

One problem out of the way

Jan 11, 2008 in Rants, Technology, Travel

Thanks very much to the scumbag who broke into my house yesterday, stealing my Xbox360, Nintendo DS, digital camera and a few other bits and bobs.

He’s solved a few dilemmas for me.

  1. Do I want to move back to Gorton ever? Sadly the answer is now no, I’ve fallen out of love with it lately. I’m going to rent the house out while I’m away, can’t see me moving back in, but it’s daft to get off the property ladder once you’re on it – might as let someone else pay my mortgage off for me!
  2. What to do with my Xbox360? Lend it someone? Store it? Sell it? Ah no, let it get nicked by some scrote who will flog it for £50 in a pub somewhere to some other lowlife
  3. I’m going to Hong Kong – land of cheap electronics, so should I stick with my pretty new, and nice digital camera, or should I buy another one in HK? Oh no, someone has stolen mine, so I need to buy one now. Any ideas for what to get, by the way?
  4. Ditto DS Lite. Great. No brain training for me!

Anyway, I’ve now sorted a load of stuff out, and getting on with emptying the place. I’m getting there, but I can’t wait to go away now.

Get organising the leaving party, and buying the presents, if you’re so inclined!

New iPod Classic and Shure E2C Headphones

Oct 19, 2007 in Technology

Woohoo – I got my nice shiny new iPod classic today. Just syncing it up now – I’ll let you know how I get on.

One thing that has annoyed me for ages about the iPod is the rubbish headphones they provide as standard with them. The new ones that come bundled with the new “Classic” are at least a bit rubbery, but the sound quality of them really doesn’t do the iPod justice. It’s like buying a Porsche, but the dealer giving you a mixed set of bargain remould tyres. It really doesn’t make sense!

Anyway, I’ve decided to plump for these Shure E2C Headphones, they look pretty decent, and the most popular earphones by the same manufacturer come in at £250 or so!!

Right, I’m going to go and have a play with it now, I’ll let you know how I get on. It was a bit of an impulse purchase, but the ex left a window open one night and my car, TV and iPod got nicked, now she’s taken all her stuff – today – I thought I might start replacing some of it.#
